Description
The Funkin Screamin has a wide, medium flat rim that is rounded on the inside. It’s a comfortable rim, and wide enough to offset lip swelling. The inside rim diameter is a small 0.590″, and there is a high alpha angle going into the cup, but there’s no undercut for chop room. This rim will feel just as small as it truly is. The cup is a shallow V, the throat is a standard #27, and the backbore is the Legends S. This mouthpiece is a variation of the legendary “Holy Grail” mouthpiece with the same rim and cup shape, but with the smaller inside rim diameter for those serious commercial and high note players. If you’re that power player who wants to peel paint off the walls, the Funkin Screamin is just right for you!
The history of this mouthpiece is a legend often told among trumpet players. It originates with Maynard Ferguson’s first mouthpiece, which was a Rudy Muck 13C that he modified by grinding down the rim. He used this mouthpiece for several years, until Dominick Calicchio created a similar mouthpiece for him. The mouthpiece created by Dominick Calicchio was used by Maynard Ferguson during his rise to fame in the 1950’s and 60’s. Eventually, he gifted the mouthpiece to a member of his band. It was well liked by many superstar trumpet players who tried it, and gained the nickname “The Holy Grail”. The Holy Grail has been copied by several companies over the years and sold under different names by various companies. The Funkin Screamin is a variation created in house at Legends Brass.
