Description
The Funkin Groovin rim is wide and semi-flat, but is nicely rounded on the inside. There is a high alpha angle for a gentle slope into the cup. The wide rim helps offset lip swelling. There is no undercut for chop room, so it will feel true to the .615″ inside diameter. The cup is a shallow V, similar in depth to Bach E. The entrance to the throat is very receptive to good air flow for a nice fat sound. Slotting is excellent with the Funkin Groovin. This model was inspired by a legendary mouthpiece familiar to many, but the Legends Funkin Groovin has been updated with the Legends enhanced throat cylinder length and Legends S backbore. These design elements maximize endurance, range and sound for the player. The Funkin Groovin is well suited for extreme upper register work, extended upper register playing, and for really groovin’ high above the staff!
The history of this mouthpiece is a legend often told among trumpet players. It originates with Maynard Ferguson’s first mouthpiece, which was a Rudy Muck 13C that he modified by grinding down the rim. He used this mouthpiece for several years, until Dominick Calicchio created a similar mouthpiece for him. The mouthpiece created by Dominick Calicchio was used by Maynard Ferguson during his rise to fame in the 1950’s and 60’s. Eventually, he gifted the mouthpiece to a member of his band. It was well liked by many superstar trumpet players who tried it, and gained the nickname “The Holy Grail”. The Holy Grail has been copied by several companies over the years and sold under different names. Famous trumpeter Dan McMillion used one version known as the “Groovin High 2”. The Funkin Groovin, now available from Legends Brass, will help you carry on the tradition of high energy upper-register playing, with musicality, charisma and power, like the great trumpet legends!
