Description
The Funkin Rockin rim is wide and semi-flat, but is nicely rounded on the inside. There is a high alpha angle for a gentle slope into the cup, but there is no undercut for chop room. It will feel true to the .605″ inside diameter. The cup is a shallow V, similar in depth to Bach E. With this mouthpiece you’ll get a nice fat sound and excellent slotting in the upper register. The Funkin Rockin has a rim and cup identical to one of the versions of the legendary “Holy Grail”, but with the added punch of a #28 throat and the Legends Manhatttan backbore. It’s designed specifically for upper register playing, and in the “skinny” blank, it packs a ton of zing. This mouthpiece goes beyond groovin’, all the way to rockin’! When you’ve got an epic trumpet solo that needs to be electrifying, you’ll want the Funkin Rockin!
The history of this mouthpiece is a legend often told among trumpet players. It originates with Maynard Ferguson’s first mouthpiece, which was a Rudy Muck 13C that he modified by grinding down the rim. He used this mouthpiece for several years, until Dominick Calicchio created a similar mouthpiece for him. The mouthpiece created by Dominick Calicchio was used by Maynard Ferguson during his rise to fame in the 1950’s and 60’s. Eventually, he gifted the mouthpiece to a member of his band. It was well liked by many superstar trumpet players who tried it, and gained the nickname “The Holy Grail”. The Holy Grail has been copied by several companies over the years and sold under different names. Famous trumpeter Dan McMillion used one version known as the “Groovin High 4*”. The Funkin Rockin, now available from Legends Brass, will help you carry on the tradition of high energy upper-register playing, with musicality, charisma and power, like the great trumpet legends!
